Design for Human Living

Course Name: Design for Human Living

Course Code: DZ124SJ24

Course Credit: 3

Course Type: Professional Elective Course

Applicable Major: Industrial Design

Course Introduction

Based on the World Design Organization's (WDO) latest definition of (industrial) design, the ultimate goal of design is to "create a better human life" through various design outputs. This is both the best of times and the worst of times. In an era of abundant material wealth, various aspects of our lives seem far from perfect: digital technology connects people yet also isolates them; individuals are filled with anxiety and stress, lacking the support of faith and the sense of stability that ritualistic behaviors like blessings can provide; when friends and family get married, we struggle to find a suitable gift; while the brilliance of Chinese culture shines brightly, artifacts detached from context often fail to resonate with us. Our course is an elective design program aimed at senior industrial design students, designed to cultivate their understanding of various human lifestyles. It seeks to enhance students' abilities to improve human living conditions—such as clothing, food, shelter, transportation, entertainment, social interaction, and rituals—through design innovation, fostering their appreciation for life and nurturing their humanistic sentiment
