Course Introduction

The Art of Robotics is an interdisciplinary undergraduate course designed for students interested in new media art and intelligent technologies. Centered around artistic creation, the course explores the diverse possibilities of robotic technology within contemporary art. With an emphasis on practical learning and creative exploration, students will engage with multiple perspectives, including the history of robotic art, analysis of artistic case studies, technological ethics, and social impacts, to better understand and expand the boundaries of artistic expression. Core topics include robotic applications in contemporary art, such as kinetic sculptures, installation art, interactive installations, and performance art, as well as the essential roles of perception and interaction technologies. Workshops and hands-on projects will encourage students to conceptualize, develop, and complete original robotic artworks. Students will experiment with interactive installations, performance, generative art, and integration of robotic techniques with other artistic media (e.g., sound, video, sculpture), resulting in unique and expressive artworks. The course objectives are to: Stimulate students’ creative potential, fostering imagination and technical skills in robotic art; Enhance students’ abilities to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge and solve complex creative problems; Encourage students to engage with social and cultural issues, producing insightful, future-oriented artworks that leverage both technology and artistic vision. By utilizing robotics as an emerging artistic medium, this course expands students’ understanding and practice of artistic creation, exploring the infinite possibilities at the intersection of technology, aesthetics, interaction, and expression.
