Course Introduction

In light of China's abundant cultural resources, it is essential to fully leverage technology's role in supporting cultural development. Currently, building upon significant achievements in digital reconstruction technologies, the accumulation of cultural big data, and the development of digital innovation platforms, design innovation has become a key driver in unlocking new dynamics for Chinese culture and creating new forms of digital culture. The course Cultural Heritage and Digital Preservation, offered as an elective for undergraduate industrial design students, focuses on both tangible and intangible cultural heritage. It addresses development trends, technical requirements, exemplary case studies, and creative practices within the realm of digital preservation. The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape of digital heritage preservation and to equip them with the necessary design tools and capabilities to engage in this field. This includes, but is not limited to, the design of digital heritage information systems, cross-media interactive experiences for digital heritage, intelligent spatial designs for cultural heritage, digital storytelling design, cultural consumption models and business strategies for digital heritage, as well as the evaluation of digital cultural value through critical and speculative design approaches.
